Most recent reply from console vault

I would prefer waiting until the current holiday promo is over before we discuss the group buy.

Email I got back from Console Vault when inquiring about the interior dimensions— critical for some objects.

Subject: Interior size

It is so hard to give dimensions so I will answer your question this way....

The vault takes up 100% of your center console and you lose very little space, so it is safe to say that the dimensions of the vault are about the same as your factory console.

Sincerely,
Console Vault

Not what I would call a professional response, which, sadly, reflects upon the company's image.

You'd think they'd at least comment on what part of the console sacrifices the interior space. Guess they're not used to super specific forum freakshows such as ourselves! I put it on my xmas list and am leaving it up to fate whether I get it or not. Despite not being impressed with CV I plan on purchasing my first handgun soon and MUST have appropriate locking storage in the runner. Went for 3 digit for quicker access although technically it's easier to crack the code 8)

I am no longer interested and am going to pass on this group buy.
The reply from them about the dimensions of the interior is all over the place. I have viewed all the photos on their website and you do lose interior space. It is not difficult to put a measuring tape on it and it is not "about the same as your factory console".
I have a local locksmith who has done some custom work on my Runner and on my home. I am going to just tell them what I want and have them come up with something. They design and fab up things like this frequently.

Funny that they can only do one promotion at a time. As if it's so hard for them to create 2 coupon codes at a time! $35 savings isn't all that great either ~10-15%

Keep in mind that S & H is included as well.

As previously stated, the feedback from C-V is that 'group buy' discounts are typically in the $35 range.

So. . .

- if you want the 4-digit lock, then buy now as that is a $35 dollar value.

- if you want either the 3-digit lock or the keyed lock, then wait until sometime next year and get the group buy discount.

Regarding the inside dimensions, I asked the same question and received in general, the same reply.

The steel used to fabricate this security box is 12 ga. steel, which is about 1/10 of an inch thick. If the inside configuration of the console area is 'squared off' so to speak, then the C-V is probably made to fit those exact dimensions, with little to no gaps of wasted space.

So yeah, there will be some lost space to the material of the C-V, but do you want a more secure means to store valuables, maybe a handgun, etc.?

Look, when the Zombie Apocalypse breaks out in your neck of the woods, you will be definitely be happy that you've got something along with you in your 4Runner, to give you a fighting chance to get back home to pick up some heavier artillery!

No affiliation with this company, etc., just trying to help folks along with their decision making / reasoning process.

Regards,

Rob

That thing takes up some serious center console space. I guess if you're truly just going to use it for a handgun and some other smaller items it's pretty cool. I have a truck gun that I just leave in my 4Runner (in a locked box under the seat) but at least this isn't transportable.

Do you have one Range?

Other than the space consumed by the dimensions of the CV itself, is there 'wasted' space due to fitment, etc.

Thanks,

Rob

I do not. I just clicked on the link for the 4th gen and the space is consumed by the safe itself. My console is pretty much stuffed with useless crap anyway so I don't see why it would even matter to me. Might think about getting one.

I had one in my 2006 Tundra. It was a solid piece of gear and it did tend to rattle a tad, but that was easily fixed, as another poster mentioned. Easy to install, but also very secure: you'd need a significant amount of time to pry this thing open, which most thieves either don't have or are not willing to spend.

It took up the entire console. Now, the Tundra didn't have the AC outlet, and I'm not sure how they build around that for the 4Runner, but I would suspect that you would no longer be able to use it.

The steel was thick/heavy, but I didn't get the sense that I "lost" a ton of room due to the product, itself. YMMV.

Personally, I won't do business with them due to the last group buy fiasco. Also, there are now a lot more options out there as far as vehicle gun lockers. No, maybe not many (or any - I haven't looked) that fit your console *perfectly*, but the overall goal - as I see it - is function, not form. That said, I know a lot of people prefer something more OEM-ish, so to each his own.
