I've heard nothing but amazing stories of the 99 4Runners. Right now their top on my list in terms of buying my first 4Runner. Any + or - you can tell me about owning one over other years?
Sorry for the late reply. I'm not on here very often. I have experience with 3 4runners. My son has had a '98 limited for several years. We also bought a 2006 new.
I have had good experiences with all three. On the '98,99 SR5, you only have 4WD. The limited in '98,99 have AWD, 4WD, which is nice for traveling at interstate speeds under questionable conditions.
My only bad experience is that changing the oil filter on the '98, '99 is a pain in the but. You have to drop the skid plate to get at the oil filter every time you change the oil.
