Approximately 20 miles east of Chilao, USFS road 3N39, above the Prairie Fork of the San Gabriel River just north and above Cabin Flat. 3N39 was previously decommissioned and is open from time to time however access all the way to Azusa Canyon is not possible anymore. Very scenic climb up to 3N06 and out to Lone Pine Canyon Rd.
We decided not to go too far down into the Praire Fork due to fire danger. I dont like having only one escape route when conditions are so hot and dry. I see you live in Pasadena. I grew up and still own a residence in South Pasadena in the Altos de Monterey.
I read this back in August. I'll have to look for this forest road on one of my maps. I can find this. I'll find out where Altos de Monterey is. On December 30th I'm giving a tour of the Hillcrest District, where the Blacker House by Greene and Greene is located for Pasadena Heritage. I volunteer with them a lot.
