For me (OP), it indeed ended up being the compressor clutch. After considering parts pricing, labor pricing and warranty coverage, we opted for a shop to replace the compressor.

My son's '98 Limited came without the air deflector (assuming a previous owner hadn't swapped the lift gate), so it must not be trim level dependent. We snagged one from the junkyard and added it. :yo:

Good call on the 1/2" breaker bar. I initially tried using my 3/8" breaker bar, and let's just say the results were not pretty. Still need to see if Craftsman will warranty that bar out......... I stepped up to a 1/2" breaker with a cheater and broke them loose. I am not in the rust-belt, fwiw.
