    Steering Column Rattle / Clunk

I got distracted with a blown alternator (courtesy of swimming in a mud pit), which is a PITA since I have a Surf and not a 4runner, and finding an NA cross-over part can be a pain. My plan, however, is to first try doubling up the wave washer and, failing that, a rag joint from a later model...

Tailgate Couresty Switch - What Wire?

Hmmm... that looks like a wiring diagram for a vehicle without a backdoor ECU. Different from mine.

Tailgate Couresty Switch - What Wire?

Exactly ... should be ... I am pretty sure I am testing it at B9, how can I confirm which connector is B9?

Tailgate Couresty Switch - What Wire?

alas, no. "Back door" in Toyota parlance is the tailgate, while the rear side doors are "rear doors". You can also see it on the diagram, the rear door courtesy switches are on the bottom of the diagram, beside the front door courtesy switches, and they are used to control the Interior Light...

Tailgate Couresty Switch - What Wire?

Exactly. I am using a continuity tester (i.e. diode setting on my multimeter) to check for continuity from gnd (chassis) to the R-W terminal, and from R-W to W-B terminals. I am testing the male side of the connector, i.e. the one in the back of the picture, that runs inside the tailgate to...

    Yep, works perfectly

Tailgate Couresty Switch - What Wire?

I must be missing something painfully obvious The diagram says that the door switch connects R-W from the courtesy light to W-B ground. The grey 10 pin connector has both RW and WB The grey connector definitely controls the dome lights. I took apart the switch and saw that it goes to a...

    Steering Column Rattle / Clunk

I am going to try 2 things: - find a 97+ yoke from an auto-wrecker and depending on its state, combine parts with mine - key is getting a spring - double up on the wave washer

Any pictures of the spring? After all, what's stopping me from adding a spring in there?

    Steering Column Rattle / Clunk

OK, so I did some more digging and exploring The part in issue is called a yoke subassembly, for which I found at least 3 interchangeable part numbers: 45290-35030 - all 3rd gen 4runners 45290-35031 - all 3rd gen 4runners 45290-35040 - all 3rd gen 4runners, a 1st gen tacos Toyota lists it as...

Thanks for the reply! So you never got rid of the clunk? The rubber flex piece you are talking about is inside this joint, right (between the plates)?

    Steering Column Rattle / Clunk

Hoping someone can help diagnose this as it's driving me nuts: Background: - Steering is tight when driving on regular roads. - Very little play in the steering. Problem: - As soon as I get offroad, and especially when I put the truck H4 or H4L (it has a multimode transfer case), I start...

Tailgate Couresty Switch - What Wire?

There is a backdoor ECU (at least there is one on my 96 Surf and I think it's identical to a 4R of that year), but it is different from the 00+ ECU.
