    3rd generation 3.4L 4runner Spark Plug/Wire Change Writeup

The cardboard tubes are there to protect the ground strap. This dosen't mean the gap is set and shouldn't be checked...you should always gap the plugs according to Toyota's specs. ALWAYS apply anti-seize to your sparkplug threads. Metal sparkplug threads in your aluminum heads without antiseize...

    timing belt

I have a fleet of Tundra's with the 3.4 motor. I use a kit from NAPA that has the timing belt, water pump, etc. in it. I see no need to go to a dealership or use Toyota parts. If I can do it, any decent mechanic should be able to do it...(LOL):D

    water pump done

I have a fleet full of 3.4's in Tundra's and have only had one water pump seize. It happened at around 140K miles. Naturally I replaced the timing belt at the same time.

    4x4 use on 2001

So I drive my 99 LTD in 4WD HI (no center lock) all the time. I don't see a lose in gas mileage and feel better about wet weather stability.

    4x4 use on 2001

I constantly drive my 99 LTD in 4wd...never take it out. 125K miles and no problems.:D

    Transmission fluid

I'm on a mission to drive my 'Runner a while longer. Can't afford a trade right now. A V-8 would be nice, though.

    Transmission fluid

A lot of subjects are black and white...this trans fluid thing seems to be very grey. Reg. trans fluid needs to be toyo fluid because of a special additive? But you can use synthetic fluid from a quality company, special additive or not. My owner's manual says Dextron III and makes no mention...

    Synthetic trans fluid

If I switch to synthetic trans fluid, will it mix with the toyo fluid that will be left in the trans.? Does it have to be a complete, total fluid exchange?

    Transmission fluid

I was under the impression that Toyo fluid has some special additive that the trans needed.

    Transmission fluid

Do I have to use Toyota transmission fluid? If so...why?? How much per quart at the stealership?

    Middle dash light out

The bulbs in the climate control are unlike any other bulb I have seen at retail outlets. I could not find any info on them on the internet. The other dash bulbs may be a standard bulb available at auto stores or Radio Shack. Pull one out to verify what you are needing.

    Transmission fluid change

I have a small shop with a lift. I really wanted to do it myself, but I know I could do a full fluid exchange as I have seen in other articles.

    Transmission fluid change

My '99 just rolled over 100K miles. I have already done all maintenance except the trans fluid change. I'm not sure if fluid has ever been changed, but I haven't done it since I got the truck at 60K miles. Let's assume it has never been changed. I would like some opinions on this fluid change...

    Middle dash light out

Everything from the top, just above the air outlets, down to below the cig. lighter is one panel. After you pull the cup holder section out and pull the shifter section away, you can pull this section out by pulling out the bottom first and then the top last. There are clips at the top that...

    Middle dash light out

Climate control backlight Problem solved. I can see the display again after dark. A quick ten minute job after you know what you are dealing with.
