I'm the OP and saw that this thread was still going - appreciate the help. I ended up getting the rust fixed by a welder at an auto restoration shop - it cost $1200 to fix all of it plus new struts, I think the welding-only would have been $900. This is in a very high cost-of-living area...

I actually went to a welder and he said it could be fixed for ~$800. He said he sees it all the time in these 4Runners - rust around the muffler side area. Didn't seem like that big of a deal to him.

Thanks everyone. I have a family member that has always wanted it and was trying to figure out a fair price then discount it fairly well. I'll tell them $1,000.

For posterity’s sake, the mechanic (Japanese car specialist) said that the rust wasn’t that bad and that six months of driving would be no problem. He said he sees 4Runners rust out all the time and has seen a lot worse out there.

How long before model year are these things usually leaked / official announcement? 2020 Highlander was officially announced in April 2019 for the 2020 model year. But, I think word was out in Feb 2019. Similar timeline for the 6th gen?

I have a 2001 4Runner SR5. I'm replacing the factory speakers, but can't figure out how to get the door panels off. Does anyone know how or know where a guide is located? I want to do this myself to save some dough, but also am afraid of messing up my door panels. Thanks.
