I just tested the battery with a multimeter: 12.29 volts so still going strong.

I believe it is the starter not successfully turning the engine. It will revv a few times before failing or "powering down". When I turn the key over, it will only revv for 2-3 seconds max before it fires up or fails. I reckon fixing the contacts would be the first thing to do before throwing...
