So my failure was with an aftermarket lower control arm. Replaced it with OEM and never had another issue.

I've definitely located my T case breather. You have to pull up the center console and unbolt the boot to get to it. It's just a short metal stub out of the top of the case if I remember correctly. I should have routed it to my dash when I was upgrading to a console with cup holders. Since...

I've been having issues with my T-case more than than anything. Had to drain water out a few times now. Need to get under the center console and re-route that. Does the auto trans have a breather other than the dipstick?

I ran mine up inside the rear pillar. Definitely no gear oil odors and frankly gas cap level isn't high enough to keep mine out of the water!

I'd have no hesitation offroading the auto. It's not like they are underbuilt. While possibly not as fun as a stick, it holds whatever gears you want it and you don't have to manage a shifter with a beverage in one hand.

I vote against aftermarket lower control arms.

Overall I was very impressed with the braking ability of my 96 in 4 Low 1st gear descending hills. Even on the steepest of hills I was crawling down with very minimal brake use.
