I had the same problem as you about 3 months ago. Brought it to my mechanic and he found a misfiring issue. I had the wires and spark plugs all replaced and she is running again just like before.

I bought my 1999 4Runner in 2010 with 245000km Now its 2012 with 286000km, Running strong with very little visible Toyota Rust. I can't picture myself driving anything else, Not sure if I'll buy a newer model though, I especially love the size and look of the 3rd gen.

Greeting everyone, I am New to the 4Runner Forum. Just wanted to know how common the Antenna breaking is amongst 3rd Gen 4Runners? and perhaps, where I'd find the part for replacement and how difficult it will be to fix. My T4R is a 1999 with 286000kms on the Odo. Any help appreciated, Thanks!
