What model or year is best for mountains?

More clarification The 4runners role would be fly fishing trips, and taking the family for rides in the mountains. It will be used in mud and snow on narrow trails from 5k feet elevation to around 10K. I understand tires are a huge part of the equation and will take recommendations there too...

What model or year is best for mountains?

07 not a TDR The 07 i'm looking at has TDR stickers on it, so If I'm understanding correctly, the TDR stickers mean nothing??? I just placed an offer on a 05 so I'll see how it goes. Thanks,

What model or year is best for mountains?

5th Generation vs 4th My 3rd generation seems so much smaller "easier to maneuver in the hills" than the 5th generation. The 4th seems to be in between the two, that's why I'm leaning towards the 4th. Is there a better year? I've heard good about the 5 speed trans that starts in 05. I wish...

What model or year is best for mountains?

What year is best I'm not overly concerned about the full time 4wheel drive vs part time because when I head to the hills, it's not an issue to put it in 4wheel drive. I like the idea of the 6 cyl because i don't need to worry about timing belt replacement. Whats the scoop on the TRD model...

What model or year is best for mountains?

I had a 96 4runner "The Zombie" and loved it. It had about 250K miles and after blowing the second head gasket, sold it. I'm looking to get another 4runner and am wondering what is my best option for the mountains? I loved the 3 generation but most of those have a ton of miles. Right now I'm...

Rear Heater coolant lines, can I use rubber?

The metal lines that run coolant to the rear heater core are leaking on my 96 4runner. Can I replace those metal lines with some rubber lines similar to fuel line?

What is this??? And whats its job???

Mine sounds like a buzzing bee I asked the same questions once, but mine sounds like a buzzing bee. I was told by my mechanic that this is dispersing pressure from the fuel system as the gas heats or cools. Not sure if I fully buy that but that's what I was told

Over heating after new head gaskets

Head gaskets are OK Thanks Be, but the head gaskets are good. They are on the side they are suppose to be. Mechanic said he remembered when he put them on there are guide tabs that make going on the wrongs side hard, and they have "this side up" on them so thats not an issue. I'll check on...

Over heating after new head gaskets

Clarification When I first got the 4runner back it ran fine but the gauge would start to head to the red line so I would shut it down to not hurt anything. When I would lift the hood, the motor didn't seem hot but I didn't check the temp with anything. The mechanic used one of those temp gun...

Over heating after new head gaskets

Update I took my 4runner back to the mechanic and numerous things were changed, tried and bottom line to it all is, it looks like the temp. gauge is bad or maybe has a bad ground but either way, it's not working. Any ideas on how to fix the existing one? How about a gauge that will really...

Over heating after new head gaskets

wrong size head gaskets I called the mechanic that installed the head gaskets and he said they both gaskets looked the same and he didn't realize that there was a left and right, He's wondering if he needs to take it all apart and do new head gaskets. Not a good deal.

Over heating after new head gaskets

Not AC I'm not turning the AC on I'm just turning the lever from hot to cool outside air. If they put the gaskets on the wrong side, wouldn't the mechanic notice that it's blocking passages? Thats kind of a big deal, I hope they wouldn't mess that up.

Over heating after new head gaskets

My head gaskets blew and I had my mechanic install new ones along with a new water pump, timing belt thermostat and all other parts that should be changed while in there. When I got it back it ran much hotter so I took it back to the mechanic. He changed out the thermostat for a Toyota one but...

I have my 4runner back but have questions.

2 out of 3 items seem fixed I took the 4runner on a little drive and the bubbling sound seems to have gone away and it seems to be idling as it should. Maybe it just needed to run for a bit to get things figured out?? It did start to heat up more than normal so I have order a Hayden fan...

I have my 4runner back but have questions.

My 96 4runner went down with a blown head gasket, I took it all apart then figured that I was over my head. I had labeled things well and hired a mechanic to put it all back together. I got it back yesterday and have a few questions. 1. It idles really high, about 2K rpms, how do I adjust...
