I was thinking that it could be a problem stemming from the initial pull of power caused by starting the engine in tandem with the initial pull of power required to get the lights going. It came with a heavy duty relay and I'm using it. Just to see what would happen, my buddy attempted to hook it up without the relay. Nothing. Checking for a recall is a good idea. I'll definitely do that.
