    Howdy... newbie from San Diego

Welcome! I'm pretty new myself. You'll find there are some great folks hereabouts. I was about ready to climb up somewhere high and throw myself off over a mystery noise in my wife's 4R, but they talked me down. (And with their support I eventually found it!) Sorry to hear about the F150. Have...

    noises rattles oh my

From my experience in searching the forums to find a solution for my own rattle, I'm convinced that whatever 4Runners are called overseas it's the Japanese word for "rattle." It seems every single 4R owner deals with rattles at times. And from a zillion different causes. However, in the case of...

Last Chance Before My Wife Sells Our 4R

I'll have to take another look. Nothing glaringly obvious. There's no way for any part of the shield to contact anything. But if that mesh band is compressed and not making firm contact with the cat body, the while thing is being held at one end and could vibrate like a bell.

Yeah, some more investigating to do, but pretty obviously front suspension or steering. Gentle low speed turns. Like in a parking lot. Left or right. Not at full lock. Just a single mild but audible "pop" heard. Not every turn, but frequently. Never felt through the truck or the steering wheel...

Last Chance Before My Wife Sells Our 4R

Pictures would be worth an awful lot of words right now... It's two single-walled halves. On one end they squeeze down to the diameter of the exhaust pipe ahead of the cat and are held together on the pipe with a clamp. The other end only extends as far as the cat itself, with it's larger...

Last Chance Before My Wife Sells Our 4R

Compliment from the wife? Yeah, she was pretty happy. But no, unfortunately there is actually another noise. Want to drive it some more so I can make sure I'm able to describe the circumstances, but it's a single "pop" heard part way through gentle, low-speed turns, like in a parking lot. Single...

Last Chance Before My Wife Sells Our 4R

Okay boys and girls...are ya ready? I found it!!! Unbolting Spare Parts - Round II - I removed three exhaust system body-mounted heat shields, a very small skid plate protecting a U-joint, and another metal part...the specifics of which escape me as I write this. This was my second round...

Last Chance Before My Wife Sells Our 4R

Good thought, but tires are new Michelins with about 5000 miles on them, and a special on-the-truck balance. The rattle has been around for over 30,000 miles. (Wife drives about 65 miles a day!) Also, the truck is actually very smooth. No vibration to be felt. Just the rattle. :mad2: Been...

Last Chance Before My Wife Sells Our 4R

For the guy that owns the company that makes heat shields, modern vehicles mean the whole company goes to Hawaii every year, and the 4Runner is definitely no exception. Hard to say how much is over-kill. The fact that most of the the shields are metal, attached to metal, with metal fasteners...

Last Chance Before My Wife Sells Our 4R

Rigtec - Thanks for the vote of confidence. Wish I felt as optimistic. One minute I want to wash my hands of it and let her trade it if she wants. The next I'm wanting to get back underneath and take another crack at it, thinking getting rid of what SHOULD be an awesome truck over a rattle is...

Last Chance Before My Wife Sells Our 4R

Thanks for all the responses guys. It's frustrating for sure. The possibility of something hiding in the frame is one I hadn't heard or thought of. I'm also thinking that even though all of the fasteners on the heat shields are secure, they have a lot of surface area that is just hanging around...

Last Chance Before My Wife Sells Our 4R

Howdy, I've been lurking here for a while, struggling to find a solution, but this is my first post. My wife's 2011 SR5 4WD has a rattle. I know, I know, the name for 4Runners in Japanese is probably the Japanese word for "rattle." And I know there probably have been more threads about rattles...
