I would replace the thermostat off the bat. They are a few bucks and easy to replace. Check your oil and make sure you aren't getting any coolant leaking in to the crank case. What kind of shape is your radiator in?

Check the air inlet hose into the manifold. They crack and cause unmetered air to get into the engine making it a real dog. You can find them online fairly inexpensively.
