My 92 acted similarly. It turned out it just need new plugs. The old ones were shot, and causing RF noise throughout the electrical system. It made the ECU lose it's mind and the engine would quit, run horribly, or not start.

Did more troubleshooting today.... I'm not a professional, but it seems that any sensor failure would not cause my problem of the CEL not coming on at all with the key ON before start. I have unplugged every sensor I can find, one at a time, and nothing changes. The CEL is supposed to come on...

I will look into the knock sensor..... but would it cause the CEL to NOT come on with the key ON before start?
