I'm going soft- want my 4R to ride like a GX

I went and drove a used 18k mile Limited. A limited's suspension is MUCH better than a stock SR5. There is little to no nose dive when braking on a limited compared to an SR5. If I owned a limited I would probably just leave it stock. But with stiffer side walled tires and Bilstein 5100's...

I'm going soft- want my 4R to ride like a GX

If you know of any air suspension that will work with our 5th gen please let me know. I'm not talking about firestone air bags. I'm talking about a true air suspension...

I'm going soft- want my 4R to ride like a GX

I hear what you're saying about the length being longer. But my gut tells me that at .85" of lift the springs are being preloaded, the front end definitely feels a little stiffer. On my last vehicle, a 2007 Tundra, I also had the 5100's at .85" and that too felt a little a little stiffer.

I'm going soft- want my 4R to ride like a GX

I have a SR5 2WD with bilstein 5100's all around, front set to .85" of lift and better than stock tires on 17" wheels, caster set to 4 degrees. Huge improvement all around than stock. Got 37K miles on this setup. I have come to the point where I'm being honest with myself and realizing that I...

275/70/17 Firestone Dest AT with 5100 at .85 on TE (review)

The only way you're going to fix the loose steering is to get the caster closer to 4 degrees. I also have bilsteins with .85 lift and they were able to get it to about 3.8 degrees. Tremendous difference.

    Leveling with springs?

Sorry I kinda went off subject... Like a year ago I was looking at springs and thought the same thing about the 883 springs. My conclusion was that the 883's will lift the front about 2.5" which is too much to "level." The 883 coils are the same spring rate as the 884 but they are 10mm...

A little teaser... shiny Icon stuff

SoCalTrail- I work in the offroad industry and you are 100% correct about King, Fox, etc not spending the R&D time it takes for vehicle OEM replacement suspension or ATV/UTV OEM replacement suspension. I've had that same thought for years now. They just don't have the time/capability/desire to...

    Leveling with springs?

Yeah that's what I'm running and it's waaaay better than stock. Brake dive is gone. Still though, I often wonder if I'd be happier long term if I went with OW 2.0 front coil-overs (set at 1" of lift) for like $600 more. I'd love to do a back to back driving comparison to see how they would...

    Leveling with springs?

The 4th gen 4runner is different than the 5th as far as spring rates. A 3" lift on a 4th won't be the same on a 5th. Most all the 5th gen front springs on the market will lift the front 2.5" or 3". To achieve "level" you want to lift the front about 1" and leave the rear alone. The way most...

    Best Setup for Towing

I tried Timbrens on my 2011 SR5 and I wasn't very happy with them. They cost more than the airbags (but you're right, installed easier, no spring removal) and I felt them kick every time I went over a speed bump or dip in the road. I would not recommend timbrens for our runners. I believe...

    Best Setup for Towing

Bilstein 5100 shocks in the front set to provide .85 inches of lift will take care of the nose dive. The combination of compressing the springs a tad and leveling the vehicle out will get rid of the braking dive. Bilsteins are a great product, but my opinion is that proper coil over shocks...

    Best Setup for Towing

I have bilstein 5100's, new tires/wheels, and I've towed. I would do tires first and foremost. Then I would do the airbags and leave it at that. Should be great. I'd say skip the bilsteins for now. Stock tires are total crap and are my #1 concern. Airbags are cheap and will keep the rear...

Help me decide, new SR5 then add Bilsteins or Trail with KDSS

SoCalTrail's first hand experience driving the TE changed my mind. I had no idea people actually took KDSS off! If I had to do it over again I would spend the extra $800 over the 5100's and get this kit: Special Order 2.0 Suspension kit At the time they seemed too expensive and I was a...

Help me decide, new SR5 then add Bilsteins or Trail with KDSS

I have an SR5 with new tires and 5100's all around. That with the caster adjustment and tires made a huge improvement over stock. But it's always going to be worth what an SR5 is worth. A Trail edition will cost more, but will always be worth more and highly sought after some day when you...
