275/70/17 Firestone Dest AT with 5100 at .85 on TE (review)

First, thanks to Mike G. Yesterday I had my Seat and headlights replaced under warranty. I had 4 Firestone Dest. AT LT 275/70/17 installed and 2 front 5100's at .85. I was expecting a bigger change in handling but really didnt get that. It does seem to help alittle for nose dive, cornering and feel the road more. Just not a huge change. They put my casters to around 3, they could or (maybe didnt try hard enough) to get close to 4. The hard part of comparing was I left a tacoma off road version they gave me for 2 days which was alot stiffer. The tacoma steering, braking, cornering was sooooo much better. The tacoma ride was harsh compared to the 4 runner but its odd that they could not get the same handling for the 4 runner. 4 Runner steering is so loose, I was getting used to it but then coming from the Tacoma....I realized.....uggg (same with brakes).

I think if you looking for a bigger change, you will need different springs.

The 4 runner sits level prior to install, I have read (and pics) a ton on leveling on this forum.....when you measure from a flat surface from the rocker panels, its sits level, I knew if I went to .85 it would be alittle nose high...I was ok with that because I will probably put in a 1" cornfed spacer later this summer. The pic below is on a slopped driveway. Once you get a full tank of gas, any weight, you can see it nose higher but even without that....is alittle higher.

They scratched all 4 rims with the roadforce balancer..wtf. They are going to have a professional try to fix it, if it doesnt work then we must have a good conversation on replacement or $$$$. It seems the plastic lifter part that goes around the rim when putting the tire on scratches the TE flat rim piece that runs around the tire. You think when the first rim did it, they could think of a way to fix that (protection), they tried another Roadforce, did the same thing. Im willing to let them try to fix it but the more I think about it, the more pissed I get. Seems like only one person on this forum has had such an issue, so to me, the installer did something wrong or the machine needs new parts...who knows.. :uzi:

The tires look alot better, more aggressive but not over kill. They are quiet, pretty close to the Bridgestones. I can hear them just alittle bit more. I think as the 13/32 tread goes down, they will because quieter. I can feel them, aggressive tread--milder then others, but no real vibration or such. They do carry the Mud and Snow symbol and look forward to NH winter and how they do. I think the LT has reduced the floaty type bounce. I was worried about how 6 ply and LT's would be over the P. I think I made the correct choice. I had them do them at 40 psi (got home and they were around 38..ugg but put them back to 40psi). I might tow a camper later on, so glad to have the extra ply's and carrying load (at 50psi).

The seat seems fixed. He thinks the headlights are made by a different manufacturer (part number might have changed ??)....not sure I buy that. They are SOO much clearer, mine were only 1.3 yrs old. Got the drive shaft lubed due to "clunck" issue (probably will replace down the road).

I got the tires for $204 a piece (prices in other places were up to 268), that included all mounting, balancing, etc....so 816 total. Bought the shocks fro Downsouth motorsports for 199.00 (free shipping)...fast service. Install was higher at 235.00 but didnt need to pay for an alignment because of the tire install. I should have done the space prior, bad planning on my part.

Any questions, ask....I can post other pics if anyone wants them. I will update MPG and if ride impression changes since I have not driven a good amount of miles. I need to hit the highway at higher speeds and hit a curvy (sp?) road, also a windy day would help on the highway to see how that is.

Looks great Ramzey. This is what the truck should look like from the factory IMO. Sorry you didn't get the results you were expecting with the Lt tires. I guess it's all pretty subjective anyway.

Did you get the 5100's for the rear too? Planning to install them when you install the CF spacers?

I came from a Tacoma as well. You are absolutely correct regarding handling and braking differences. I guess with this much additional mass, the 5th gen will never drive like a 4th gen or Taco, but the factory set-up is just plain ridiculous.

Hey, I wanted to thank you for your help too....your info was great. I should have added that above. I was thinking of adding the rear at the time of the spacer...wanted to see if the ride would get too stiff before I did that. Once I drive more, maybe Ill feel a different result from my 1st impression. I honestly think the Tacoma messed me up...lol. Came back and was like..."damn this steering response is the worst" even though I did get used to it....more time in the runner will bring me back to that...lol Im glad I went with the LT so far......love the look. Need a Stubby Antenna now....hitting the garage...ha! Pissed about my Rims though....Doesnt seem like anyone else has had this issue, got the typical response, "it can happen"....ya ok......idiots! :50cal:

I'd go with the 5100s. They don't cost much, and the install is SUPER easy in rear. My $0.02. Either way, the truck should look great with the subtle lift. Good luck!

looks good. why was your seat replaced? been having ongoing issues with my driver's seat an wondering if you were having the same thing... where in NH are you? what dealer?

Had the lumbar issue since day one...popping and creaking. Waited for tsb. Had grasp phone in concord. I live close to concord. They have been good, except rim issue but I know they will make it right......I hope.

The road force did that? Looks more like tire mount marks. The local tire shop here uses a thick grease on the edges when they mount. Do you know if they used the Haweka tool when they balanced?

Looks like a grease was used.....I asked for the haweka adapter to be used but not sure if they did......they insisted they had state of the art equipment with different flanges......so who knows.....I asked and hope they used it...don't know.

4 Runner steering is so loose, I was

The only way you're going to fix the loose steering is to get the caster closer to 4 degrees. I also have bilsteins with .85 lift and they were able to get it to about 3.8 degrees. Tremendous difference.

Ya I told them to get close to 4 but would be ok 3 to 3.5....they kinda gave me a hard time because they said once in spec that's enough...I said it shouldnt be an issue ...I was paying...with new tires so it should have been my call...I guess I should have made more of a stink but might need a new align, ent after spacer....I'll go elsewhere. Feels looser then before yet the caster specs are exactly the same prior. Odd

update: After some highway trips, around town driving and so on. The steering does seem to be the same but a little better on the highway, probably the tires are helping that. The turning and dive is better as stated but not fully gone. I do like it at .85 setting, will probably play with the back end still but I dont feel too much in a rush to do that. The ride with the new tires gives it alittle more stable feeling, looks better and just as quiet. I went camping and by loading up the cargo and on top of the yakima rack, good amount of reverse rake even though there was not a ton of weight, hence why I want to add a spacer back there. Took it up MT Washington, pics to post soon on the pic thread. Fixed the antenna issue hitting the garage with the pilot stubby antenna, works good but not as good as stock...lost some reception.

I feel it pulls alittle to the right but not sure if that is just the crown in the road or the casters being about 1 degrees apart from each other. Also still need to resolve my rim issue.....idiots.

Last thing is that the heavier tires or bigger tires did take some hp from the engine....ie pick up....I find myself having to give it more gas sometimes to get moving better.....might be just in my head. :thumb3:

Gas mpg didnt change much, maybe .5 to 1mpg at the most. The yakima rack took about 3 mpg off, I only use it for camping or a big trip.

air bags

fixed it for you!

Really, Air bags are what you want - the ability to modify your spring rate based on load. Even with a spacer, you will be loading your suspension because the spring rate will be the same.

lol....ya, I was thinking both to be honest with you. Airlift 1000, I hope they last though...Also add 5100 while they are in there.

Ramzey, your truck looks really good, exactly what I'm after for the front.

Bumping for updates, and a couple questions, as I'm thinking about the 5100's set to .85 on my truck.

Are you stilling liking the decision?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by getting the settings closest to 4, can you explain what this does?

Are you saying the truck sits nose high when the shocks are set to .85?

IIRC, some folks have complained about their 5th gen wandering in the lane when on the highway. Adjusting the castor of your front wheels to 4 (or as close as possible) may eliminate this tendency and allow your T4R to track in a straight line.

Glad I made the decision on those exact tires, shocks and minor lift...85. During the alignment I tried to get positive caster, set to 4.0 but could only get around 3.0 (I'm sure the dealer didn't try to hard). (this helps with steering response). Yes, I think it's alittle nose high but most can't tell and most will say its level but I think it's slightly higher but not really that noticable. I'm happy I did it. Still might add a 1" spacer in the rear because I like the look of alittle rack but not in a hurry. If I had money and faith in the dealer, I would have done 1.5 front shock setting and 1" rear spacer( maybe different spring instead that gives 1" lift). I think that would look great. I didn't want to go with 285's for fuel, and engine response and I wanted only to go up to load c so my tires to me we're the perfect decision.....they are quiet, feel good, wear well (more tread then p rated). The shocks did help with cornering and some braking, tires helped this as well. Break dive is not elimated (would have to change string I think). Haven't tried tire in snow yet. If I went higher, I wouldn't fit in my garage with my Yakima rack. I changed out the antenna because it was hitting. Let me know if I can help you with more ?'s.
