sorry, im used to posting in car specific forums, because this is actually for my dad's car. the vehicle is a 96 4runner sr5. i was thinking about going out and buying a code reader, but i'm just looking for an alternative to spending about 100 bucks.

i tried searching, but didn't come up with much but here's my question: i know there's a way to check the error codes using a paper clip in the engine bay. can someone point me in the right direction on how to do this? thanks.
