how far can you new stick can go by now?
My 4Runner may have the same engine and I had experience nearly as hard as yours: It is easy to get jammed in there.
I would try the new stick carefully and gently enough just to find where the broken tip is, and then see what I can do with that.
I have been driving my 4Runner since 2002 and its rear defogger worked not even once.

I did some homework about this job but was still hesitating to pull the antenna assembly out from under to remove the broken cable, until I found and read this post.
The 1st section of my power antenna got stuck in its housing and it took me half an hour to remove it...
