I used a solder station set around 520 degrees and used .032" rosin core solder. I didn't use flux either. Have you checked the ribbon cable going to the control? I would try reseating it and see what happens.
There is an led under the ignition ring. If you pull off the lower dash, you will see it. I had some black tape I had to pull off to see it. Be careful as there is some very thin wire going around the ring where the key goes. I am going to do mine once I figure out how to get to the led.
