The future is in twin turbo V4 for Toyota/Lexus, not diesel...at least in the US. The new LS500 makes over 400 hp in a twin turbo V4 and kills the power of the former V8 with better MPG. People defending the 4.0 are doing a dance. It is straight obsolete.

With the lift and 285s, I'd think the computer readout would give you something like 10-13 mpg. How many tanks of 10 have you seen? Do you tow?

OP. Put in 4hi on dry pavement and see if you get drive train binding. If so 4wd is working and you can chalk this up to snow conditions. If no binding then no 4wd and you have a vehicle issue.

I bet it is a CV as you've indicated. Lift the front of the vehicle and hand spin each wheel to determine which one (turn the wheel while hand spinning). CV would explain all your symptoms and the lift and spacers and your frequent off-roading likely resulted in premature failure.
