What did you do with your 4runner today?

I actually pulled the PCV out. After 14 years! i had sprayed penetrating oil into it but finally decided to gave it a shake. It rattled. No, I didn't replace it, just cleaned it good. I also went around and gave the 10 mm valve cover nuts a tighten. I noticed oil inside the plug wells when...

What did you do with your 4runner today?

I changed out the plugs to the NGK Iridiums, put in a new air filter, sucked out the PS rez, did a engine oil flush (1/2 quart ATF), changed oil and filter (Mobil 1 '209' ~$6). Checked all the fluids and tire pressure. Feels like new. Sold off a couple of 04 tires and rims for 60 bucks.

4LO Indicator on. Not in 4WD!!

Interesting, and good luck. But I wouldn't have cleared the codes. Better to let them see it.

4LO Indicator on. Not in 4WD!!

My advice is to get the codes first before going to dealer (its under warranty?). Don't clear them out, just note down the codes and then see what they say. It will put you in the position of calling BS on some crap they try and pull. They might just disconnect your battery for a few minutes...

One cause & fix for "VSC TRAC" & "VSC OFF" lights, Zero Point Calibration

The 'party-line' is that it is to prevent 'engine-damage'. It is total BS and they should be sued in a class-action case. They should just flip on a CEL. That is all that is needed. Whoever coded the ECUs screwed the pooch and it would be a case of a recall where the owners would have to get...

One cause & fix for "VSC TRAC" & "VSC OFF" lights, Zero Point Calibration

Wow, these problems are still around. I have a 2004 4Runner and I always plug in the OBD while the engine is running. I then turn the car off to read/erase codes, and only take the OBD off when the 4runner is back running. I just know it works and if I take the OBD off any other way, I am in...

4LO Indicator on. Not in 4WD!!

I have had instance of seeing the 4LO indicator. I recently changed struts in the 4runner, and took it out and went into 4wd normally. By that, I mean it was from a slow forward roll in drive. So, no problems. Several months later, snow is forecast and I took the runner out, put it in 4wd...

VSC, TRAC, and Check engine lights on

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/100881-cel-vsc-lights-o2-sensor-work-around.html Check out my work-around for this annoying issue. Basically all you would have to do is share the sensor reading from the post-cat O2 sensor on the good side. In my case, the driver's side rear O2...

One cause & fix for "VSC TRAC" & "VSC OFF" lights, Zero Point Calibration

If I don't use the code reader in the right order, I trip the zero point cal problem. I can't clear it by using the battery disconnect, so going through this procedure solves that issue. I only put the reader on now when the car is running and I wait for it to ask me to turn off the engine and...

    CEL/VSC Lights: O2 sensor work-around

I finally got fed up with the CEL and VSC lights coming on and decided that I would at least make a work-around. Why it happens: My understanding is that I get the PO138 error code every 50 miles or so is because the 4RUNNER is doing a BIT (Built In Test). The test runs the car rich for a...

Aged Tires: A Driving Hazard? (MUST READ)

I just bought some craigslist tires for my nissan and was glad they were 08. I am running my origional 04 spare on the back of my 4runner and picked up a 06 spare on craigslist. Its made in japan and I do not see the mfg date? maybe on the inside?

    Ethanol Fuel mixing

I was wondering if I am the only one that has tried mixing E85 with pump gas to run 'E'-mix? I find that the V6 4Runner can run up to 'E30' very well and achieve very comparable MPG. I only do this in warm-to-hot weather. I have done this for about 3 years now. I have modified my K&N air...

    Colorado '04 4RUNNER

Hi All I have a 04 4runner V6 with over 120k on it. I have had to change the front rotors since the car is driven in the mountains and steep braking. I do all work on the car myself and have had the usual issues with VSC. I have put a K&N style air filter on the car but otherwise it is stock.

One cause & fix for "VSC TRAC" & "VSC OFF" lights, Zero Point Calibration

I have also been through all this with my 04 4runner. The problem was at first intermittant, and when I went to the dealer, the lights had gone out. They said its 60 bucks to check anything because there is no CEL. Stupidly, I let the warranty run out. Then the CEL and VSC lights would...
