    99 shifting issue

Voilala - I remember this vividly! I had the wrong plugs in the truck. They ran fine for quite some time but when they started to break down there wasn't enough fire for the truck. The recommended plug is a split fire... kind of expensive but replacing the plugs solved the problem. I sold...

    99 shifting issue

Update: I was so sure of myself and I was so wrong! I found a local mechanic who is fair & honest, recommended by a few friends. As soon as I described the issue to him, he said NOT torque converter. He said he gets one like this a week and 95% of the time it's not the converter, in fact...

    More tranny issues...sigh.

Qyota, my 99 has some transmission issues as well. 111K miles and I tow a boat during the summer for short distances. Mine doesn't slip but it does "buck" as the torque converter locks / unlocks. I've found some threads on other web sites that say the transmission oil cooler is too small on...

My runner pops out of 4wd all the time

I had a Subaru 4x4 that used to do the same thing... it was because the tires were different sizes. The different sizes caused the drive axles to turn at different speeds and the transmission couldn't handle it so ... you know the rest :) on my 99 4runner 4x4, I had an issue where it would...

    99 shifting issue

update: So after doing more research and putting more miles on the truck, I'm 98% sure the problem is the torque converter. I found a few other threads that talk about how the oil cooler is small on these trucks and towing without turning off the over drive will over heat the torque converter...

    99 shifting issue

thanks for the responses guys!! It has 111K mikes on it now, the fluid was flushed about 90K. I haven't greased the drive line. I checked the mounts at about 90K. It only happens between 3rd & 4th. I do tow a boat on some weekends, it weighs about 3000 lbs. about 20 minutes each way to /...

    99 shifting issue

Guys, I have a 99 4x4 limited automatic that has developed a shifting issue in the last week. It shifts smoothly up through 4th gear. I'm cruising along in 4th at 50+ mph and the engine is turning about 1500 rpm, if I get a slight uphill, I get a clunk like it thinks it wants to downshift...

    Climate control problems

whomhead, I found a used one for $50 on the yotech forum. Took about an hour to do the swap. The only issue was the light bulbs needed to be swapped. I haven't had a problem since. I would just start calling some of the local yards, I remember searching on-line and the yards typically...

    Factory Fog Lamps

Guys, Are the factory fog lamps on a 99 limited really sealed or when I take it apart will I find a $3 bulb that can be replaced? The dealer wants a fortune to replace the entire assembly for a burned out bulb :-( thanks! Jeff

    Climate control problems

bamaman, My 99 with 66K miles has got the same issue. It started a couple of months ago. Now I'm at the point where the four ouside buttons won't work at all. I can control everything manually, just can't activate the defrost. Since winter's coming I guess I'll need to find a control unit...

    4wd

Thanks for the advice! It's interesting to hear that I'm not the only one. When I bought the truck 8 months ago it seemed to behave differently, that's why I thought a problem had developed. I'll just keep an eye on it and be patient. Thanks!

    4wd

thanks for confirming the clunk is normal. yes, I'm aware the shift is made while in motion. I've also found I need to let off the gas for a moment and step again after the shift to get it to engauge. The concern is that it doesn't seem to fully engauge using only the 4WD button. When I...

    4wd

Guys, My 99 Limited 4x4 seems to not be shifting in and out of 4WD as easily as I would expect. Using the button on the 4WD lever, the sensor on the dash just flashes after a bit, if I used the lever and lock the diff, it usually goes right away. The button by itself will still engage the...

    Code 0171

The screws were a little tough to get to, had to move another component out of the way but in total it took 15 minutes. The truck is running great... I'm not a big fan of the dealers and I thought I found a good one!
