    3rd life expectancy

That's wild... so all the maintenance receipts in the world didn't even help. My 2001 with 152K was somewhat neglected but the drivetrain has been perfect since I have owned it. Doesn't burn a drop of oil, or leak anywhere for that matter, at one point leaked a bit at the valve cover gaskets...

    New Arrival - 99 Limited 4x4 - Bone Stock w/Pics! - Requesting Input

I don't think they are known to fail, exactly. They will fail like any other part and there was a recall but only for 01-02's. The failure seems to happen more with lifted trucks or trucks in extreme service. If they haven't been replaced they should as when they fail it's usually pretty ugly...

diagnosing brake issue pulling to right - high heat on left caliper

It definitely was, the sliders were rusted pretty badly. However the cylinders still worked after I removed the pads and threw in some plywood so they wouldn't pop out. Enough to crush the plywood after a couple pumps. Instead of taking it all apart I cleaned up the pins lubed everything and put...

diagnosing brake issue pulling to right - high heat on left caliper

Forgot to mention.. the calipers, rotors and pads were new 20k miles ago as well. Seems like the culprit is weak seals that allow moisture to sit and build rust which eventually fouls the bores. I didn't do the install, but I am seeing that the brakes need more than cursory attention if you...

diagnosing brake issue pulling to right - high heat on left caliper

Getting around to figuring this out... While driving the truck has a slight tendency to track right, so this led to me to think alignment was off. Under hard brake it pulls quite a bit to the right. After reading the various similar problem threads I took a harder look at the brakes. All...

Frame rot repair - tell me I'm going to h***

I did this yesterday got the screen cleaned out and the fluid flushed but the whine persists. I was thoroughly convinced it would fix it but I think the pump has been starved for oil for so long it's had it. It whines when cold but not really when driving around except for the odd squeal. I've...

What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Supersized my diff fill plug. The plug was rusty and already a bit chewed up so no socket combination worked and was literally rust welded on. Heated first with a torch (MAPP) which didn't seem to do much, but after all the hassle welding it was hot enough that you could have loosened it by...

    Need advice! Another rusted frame...

Um, I know you southern guys are all spoiled over the rust but this is nothing... Wire wheel it, sandblast if you want to do a pro job, check for any suspect areas with the pointy end of a slag hammer, undercoat, and re-inspect every couple months. Nothing to worry about if you can stay on top...

    *SOLD* '97 SR5 4Runner. *SOLD*

G-- damn that rig is clean. Good to know there are still trucks like that out there. Not in the market but if I wanted a mission and the will to import it into Canada I'd go the distance for this one. LOVE the wheels. Good luck with the sale someone is going to get a gem.

I'll give this a shot, thanks. Thankfully only have to do one now, the other got cleaned out 100% during the repair process.

Frame rot repair - tell me I'm going to h***

Trust me, if I didn't want to use this as a platform to brush up on the welding and fab skills (cue the safety nannies in 3, 2, 1...) I would have just gotten rid of it. When I first saw it all I parked it in disgust and walked away LOL But I had a welder, tools, garage and a bit of knowledge...

Frame rot repair - tell me I'm going to h***

I've got a plan for the other frame rail to preserve and treat it on the inside but there is a ton of dirt in there I can't easily get out. I am toying with the idea of cutting an access hole and welding it back up again either on the bottom or side. Using the pressure washer hasn't helped that...

Frame rot repair - tell me I'm going to h***

Continued from above... This happened while grinding. I had leather gloves for welding. Goes without saying you need all the safety gear - helmet, mask, leathers which I really want but don't have. Rubber pads if you are lying down, just watch for slag though. This is the 19" plate that...

Frame rot repair - tell me I'm going to h***

OK I've spammed 15 other threads now I am ready to post this mini tutorial/how-to on rot repair. A couple weeks ago I discovered after 3 years of driving (got the truck mid-2016) the cancer had advanced on the passenger frame rail. This had already been patched twice, once with a massive plate...
