How many miles on your 4runner?

I have a 1998 SR5 with a manual transmission. I've had it just over 28 years. I bought it in December 1997 while it was in transit from Japan. It's right at 400,000 miles. It has too much rust from too much winter use in the Mid Atlantic and mainly New England and a few bumps and bruises. I...

    4WD Actuator Stuck

BTW, I have a 1998 SR5 with a manual transmission with a 4 H and 4 L lever on the center console next to the shift lever so no magic button but the technique worked moving the lever instead of pressing a button. My system has a VSV actuator not an electric one.

    4WD Actuator Stuck

I tried this solution about a year and a half ago when my actuator was stuck after not using my 4 wheel drive or exercising it for several years. Oops. This technique worked like a charm. Last night, after neglecting 4 wheel drive since then, I tried to put my 4Runner in 4 wheel drive to get...

How many miles on your 4runner?

My 1998 SR5 Manual has 362,400 miles. I'm the original owner. I bought it while it was still on the ship from Japan. I'm planning on getting 500,000 miles from it. My 4Runner outlasted it's replacement. I bought a new 2016 Tundra Limited 3 1/2 years ago to replace my 4Runner when it died...

How to Remove and Replace Cigarette Lighter

I've never seen a plastic trim removal tool or at least didn't know what it was if I did see one. I did a search. I guess you have to get a kit and start experimenting and guess where the clips are too?

How to Remove and Replace Cigarette Lighter

Thanks. That doesn't look too hard in the video.

How to Remove and Replace Cigarette Lighter

I'm familiar with removing the fusible link and using alligator clips right off of the battery in the future. I'm not sure I just want to defeat the fusible link. It's there for just the reason I blew mine. I can't figure out how to remove the dashboard panel. It's large. The one's I've...

How to Remove and Replace Cigarette Lighter

Hi, I have a 1998 SR5 4Runner with a manual transmission. I bought it new on the ship from Japan. It's been great all these years. It has 362,400 miles and will rust out before it wears out. I blew my 12V cigarette lighter using a tire inflator a couple of months ago. I didn't know tire...

    Front Propeller Shaft

Thanks. That's what the Tacoma manual shows. Is that from a 4Runner shop manual? It's definitely not going back to the place that screwed it up.

    Front Propeller Shaft

So my 4Runner has been royally screwed by a Toyota dealership because my 6 month old clutch which was replaced by an independent repair shop with a good reputation may have been a poor job or received a defective bearing. So Wednesday morning I get under the truck to grease the propeller...

    Checking Valve Clearance

My 4Runner has been in two dealership shops for the last month. The second one to fix what the first one screwed up. I will post a picture later today or tomorrow. I'm starting another thread because the nightmare isn't over.

    Checking Valve Clearance

Sorry about your problem. It seems that you should verify if the valve is stuck or burnt first. I believe that what ever is wrong with that cylinder can be verified with a scope or other diagnostic testing first.

    Checking Valve Clearance

The dealership had issues with my 4Runner. They kept it for 11 days. When I got it home I looked under the hood and noticed that some of the parts were not reinstalled correctly. The top of the engine doesn't look like how I vaguely recall it looking like all these years while changing the...

    Checking Valve Clearance

Good. That gives me some comfort with my decision to follow the recommendations in the owner's manual.

    Checking Valve Clearance

I know I'm paying a double premium for having someone else do it and then having it be a Toyota dealership. It's in to have something redone that the independent shop a mile away did wrong. I don't have an independent shop I trust now. I reread my owner's manual. It says to conduct an...
