All things equal, should I get the V6 or V8

For what it's worth, I tow 4,000lbs with my V6 in the foothills of CA. It does just fine. The limits of the 4Runner when towing, whether it is V6 or V8, is the short wheel base. The tail will start wagging the dog on heavier loads. The V8 won't help you there. These V6/V8 threads crack me up...

It pulls my new boat like a dream!

Good point Hawkdog. I think the V8 owners are like diesel owners. They think you can't tow anything without either. If you are under 5k lbs, why not tow with a V6 and get better gas mileage when you aren't towing...which for me is about 95% of the time. It's not like the 5th Gen is a cross over...

It pulls my new boat like a dream!

Is your boat 4,000 lbs dry? Does that include the trailer? You will notice a loss in low end torque with the V6, but once you get it up into the sweet spot around 2-3k rpm, it pulls well. IMHO if you are over under 5K lbs gross weight on flat land, the V6 will do fine. If you are towing in the...

It pulls my new boat like a dream!

Yeah 55 all day long. With a different prop, 60. That '94 you bought looks really clean. Nice buy. I really want to upgrade to a 5th gen. I like the style much better.

It pulls my new boat like a dream!

Nice boat! Good to see another old school ski boat. My boat is about the same weight dry and my '08 V6 tows it well even even on steep grades. No sag either. Boat is an '87 Sanger TX... barefooter. Great slalom boat too. It flies.

    Transmission Cooler?

I am looking for a good transmission cooler for my '08 T4R v6 4x4. I tow quite a bit with it. Can anyone recommend a cooler that would work well and be fairly easy to install?

What did you drive before your T4R?

197? Ford Pinto (totalled when someone rear ended me... remember the Saturday Night Live skit? Boom! 197? Ford Gran Torino-Wagon (baby blue w/ 351 Cleveland) 198? VW Rabbit Diesel (couldn't get out of it's own way) '84 VW Scirocco (best handling car I ever had) '94 Honda Accord '91 Nissan...

    4th Gen V8 Transmission Durability

I have a 2008 T4R with V6. My manual states to change the tranny fluid every 30k if towing frequently. I thought the trannies were the same on the V6 and V8 after 2005 or so when they switched to 5 speed. Is this incorrect? Do the V6 and V8 have different transmissions? OP- I just went through...

    And it can tow

I tow my 2,500lb ski boat with my V6 4Runner in the foothills of CA. Total load is about 3,500lbs with trailer and gear. Pretty impressed coming from a V8. The flat torque curve is nice. It's my wife's daily driver. Good all around SUV! I don't think may rigs can do everything the 4Runner does...

    Looking To Buy a 07 4Runner SR5 Sport

'08 and later have side curtain airbags standard. You mentioned you have kids so I would check if the '07 you are looking at has side curtain airbags as an option. It was a no-brainer for me because I have kids too.

    My 2007 v6 4runner engine blew

You're not getting my point. You are basing your decision on an unknown sample. It's that simple. I don't care if it's a V8, I4, V6 or a horse drawn carriage. It's really not worth arguing over. Merry Christmas.

    My 2007 v6 4runner engine blew

I am not familiar with ih8mud. What I am saying holds merit if you don't know the percentage of owners who post, or are willing to post on this forum. There is no way you know that no V8's have failed since 1997. If you want to make your decision based on the small amount of owners who post...

    My 2007 v6 4runner engine blew

So you think everyone with a V8 belongs to this forum? I think only a small percentage of people with 4Runners post on this forum.

    How long do eng/trans last

Side curtian airbags became standard on 4Runners 2008 and later. I guess it was an option prior to that.

    Performance V6 vs V8

This initially appears to support my belief that the mpg difference between the 4L V6 and the V8 is more like 2-5mpg, not 1-2mpg. I get 22-24mpg on the highway in my V6...lighter two wheel power. Put it in 4x4 when I need it. I know some of you V8 owners don't care and that's cool. Rock on with...
