My '11 is at about the same mileage and does something Similar but only when its wet and turning/ going up a driveway My guess is the balljoints. Haven't bothered checking it yet.

Forgot to mention......... Check for coins stuck in there. That coin tray next to the shifter is a kids magnet for 2-3 yr olds. I've had to get coins out of the shifter gate and a/c vents more than once.

If it is a defective gear selector switch i'm pretty sure you should be covered. Otherwise toyota would be once again under the nhtsa loop like it was a few years ago with that infamous floormat case. FCA had a similar problem with their gear selectors and it had to be redesigned.

Check for leaks. If the system is low on freon (from a leak)the compressor will shut off automatically. Compressor oil is very messy and easy to detect. Many stores sell r134a freon which include the hose/pressure gauge. Check the pressure. -use eye protection
