Great questions! I have the same stock setup and I am interested in doing what you plan on doing with swapping for a Kenwood DNX8120. Hopefully someone can chime in on how to do this.

I have a 2006 with factory JBL Nav and I installed the VAIS that works great. All controls work, including steering wheel, as it treats the iPod like a CD. It also works with iPhone.
