While down in wheel well, working on the starter yesterday, I noticed broken linkage: How bad is this? Can I order the part and swap it out on my own, or do I need to get to a repair shop (or dreaded dealer) soon? Huge thanks in advance for any/all input!

Yep, contacts indeed. All fixed now. I never had the starter out. The service tech @ the auto-parts store hooked-up a machine to the battery which tested the starter, supposedly. Good thing this place exists for 2nd opinions =]

[UPDATE] Problem solved! The starter contacts were the issue all along. The new starter contacts I ordered came in last week and I finally set aside some time yesterday to switch them out. First of all, much thanks to everyone who posted and helped me get through this issue. I am an amateur...

Thank you SO MUCH for your input! Just to clarify, the engine has never died after it's been started, so I can eliminate that anything with the fuel delivery system or fuel filter is an issue. Based on this, it's most definitely the contacts. The write-up link you provided is super detailed...

Yep, that's exactly the issue (turn the key, and all I get is a click. Then, several tries later, it starts as if nothing had ever happened). I never, physically, removed the starter to check for issues. The starter was ruled out based on the test that the O'Reilly Auto Parts guy did. He hooked...

It never shut down while driving, only on startup. The first couple times the issue happened, the car choked a couple times, then died. Now, as you see on the video, nothing happens. I turn the key and there's no choke, just 'click' and car won't start. Ignition could definitely be the issue.

Agreed. The spark plugs and wires have been ruled out as an issue. As far as bad gas... could be, but I've never heard of anything like that before. I haven't changed anything with the fuel system since I bought the car. I'm going to take a look into this tomorrow, do some internet...
