So now the gauge is wavering between the middle and right before the red. Driving on the highway it would read in the middle, on normal roads it would waver

So this did not fix the problem actually. It was still overheating, so I replaced the Tstat, flushed the system, and got a new radiator cap, and now the coolant tank is boiling. I'm pretty sure it's a blown HG

I wasn't, it was such a small tear it wasn't enough to leak out and make a difference.

Just found out the problem, the hose going from the back of the block to the heater core had a small tear in it. $15 from my local toyota dealer, and I get it tomorrow morning. Thanks for the help!

Both upper and lower hoses are warm, haynes manual says thermostat isn't the problem then.

Just called toyota, Head gasket was done at 170K in 2002. Truck is now at 270K.

My 3vz started steaming, and there was a hissing sound coming from the back of the block. Coolant level is fine, I cant see any coolant in my oil, anyone have a similar problem? What else should I check?
