My mechanic says they only want to visually inspect my 4Runner after 500 miles. However, I see online that some suggest an oil and filter change after the first 500 miles.

Somewhat related, I'm having my 1997 4Runner SR5 engine rebuilt due to very similar symptoms. Last time I experienced white smoke from my tailpipe, a cracked cylinder head was to blame.

I've was told in 2007 that my 4Runner might have a higher likelihood of gasket failure. The re-machined engine has run well for the past 17 years, and so I'm hoping the engine rebuild gets me another 17 years of reliable service!
