1997 SR5 Back From Major Surgery

Four weeks and several thousand dollars later my 1997 SR5 is back from service.

- completely rebuilt engine
- new suspension + 1" lift because why not?

Question: I have an event that requires 3-4 hours of freeway driving tomorrow. Is it okay to take the 4Runner on this drive so soon after rebuilding the engine?

I'd say sure, but best to ask the guy who rebuilt it and will warranty it how you should drive it.

New engines usually have a break-in period of 500 miles. You're suppose to vary the speed over that period and avoid long drives at the same speed. After the 500 miles break-in, you do an oil and filter change. So, I don't know if going on a 3-4 hour road trip with your freshly rebuilt engine is the best decision. It would be better to mix up the first 500 miles with city and freeway miles.

Not only that, but the risk of errors/problems on a non-factory-built engine are much higher than something like a new factory long block. You want to have short-ish (10-30 minute) drive cycles with time to fully check things over after each for a while. Also, the tow will be easier/cheaper if something does go wrong if you stay local. No cruise control, vary RPMs, avoid idling/traffic (city driving is ok, just not traffic jams).

An oil change at 500-1k miles would be good too.
