No need. The trailer harness includes a wire for "reverse" that is hot when you shift into reverse (so the back up lights light up in reverse, and only in reverse).

I scan mine with Torque on Android using a OBD11 bluetooth device you can get on amazon or ebay. It will read any fault codes and then look look them up on the web if you want. I think it can reset them as well but haven't tried yet.
