I can say that when we initially got in the car to leave the dealership, the diff indicator was on (which it had not been when we got out of the car). The woman says she did not push it on. Later it was reported from service that the diff indicator on the dash was randomly flashing off...

All of these comments are extremely helpful! Thank you so much everyone! Hubby has just left the dealership and they have sent him home in the rental again "until this gets resolved". He spoke to customer service and they said they will "take care of us". Not sure yet what that means but...
