I also found a 2wd tranny out of a 84 truck thats good to go. Would the transfer case bolt up to that?

Hello, just bought a 1985 4runner, its in great shape minus the transmission i believe. while going up a large incline on the I-17 from phx to flagstaff AZ the truck died of on me. now it "chatters" in any gear but Neutral and 3rd. I figured it was the throwout bearing but why would it be dead...
