1985 4 runner transmission issue?

Hello, just bought a 1985 4runner, its in great shape minus the transmission i believe.

while going up a large incline on the I-17 from phx to flagstaff AZ the truck died of on me. now it "chatters" in any gear but Neutral and 3rd. I figured it was the throwout bearing but why would it be dead quiet in 3rd gear? the tranny is in the back of my friends Bronco II now and before I have some shop crack it open or buy a used one I was hoping somebody else has had this problem as well.

When we took the tranny off we also went to swap out the clutch just to be safe but the thing is brand new! so I just have the throwout bearing swapped for now.

Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks for the help.

I also found a 2wd tranny out of a 84 truck thats good to go. Would the transfer case bolt up to that?

thanks for the heads up. will an IFS tranny fit in my 1985 with the solid axle? what years are interchangeable?
thanks

No offense, but you might just want to take it to a quality tranny shop, have them crack it open, and rebuild if necessary. Granted, it will cost more than buying a replacement/junk yard part, You will have a perfectly rebuilt tranny with a warranty on it from the shop. You know what I mean?

Parts from the 2wheel drive trans can probably be used to fix your 4 wheel trans. such as the cluster , shifting forks and linkage, input shaft, etc.

A trans doesn't or care know if it's in an IFS truck.
The key factor is what engine? If it's a 22R it has a G5x series trans, if it's a 22RE it's a W56 variant.

i would bring it to a shop but its going to cost me 1200 dollars and on a college students budget a used tranny will work for me just fine.

Make sure you pick up one that is the same length or else you will have some driveline work or replacement ahead of you.
