What did you do with your classic T4R today?

Installed a new 15" Grant Steering Wheel. The leather on the original was flaking in my hands on humid mornings. I'm keeping the original, just in case. Next, some detailing and then the top is coming off. Just in time for maximum Texas heat in August.

Ok - I've searched - but how do I replace the brakelight bulbs?

Thanks! Thanks. Its a first Gen and I saw the 6 screws. Just did not want to mess with them if it was not the right thing to do.

It should be easy, but it looks like the light assembly is not as accessible as later models.

Took the top off after 6 months on. The top is now hanging from the ceiling of my garage. Ruby is feeling free!

Trouble restarting when engine is hot

Giro, I'm not an electrician. You can go to a good mechanic who will set up a relay wire directly from the battery to the starter.

Trouble restarting when engine is hot

Starter relay I had the same problem. Solving it was a real PITA. After reading the blogs, I tried a relay to the starter. The problem has been solved for that last few years.

    Unusual Starting Problem

RAD, I went to your link after I submitted my response. Dang. You are not an armchair electrician. I have not had to read a circuit diagram since high school physics class. Hopefully your post will help others solve their problems quickly. I wasted nearly 10 years of wandering from repair...

    Unusual Starting Problem

RAD, I had the relay installed by a Toyota expert in Austin. Bearden Automotive. The small shop only works on Toyotas and Lexus. But the way I understand it, the charge travels from the battery via the wiring harness to the solenoid, which pushes a plunger that activates the starter...

1989 4Runner V6, Will not Hot Start, sometimes

Sounds like the same problem with the 3.0 in my 89 4Runner. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/maintenance/106304-unusual-starting-problem.html

    4Runner won't start when hot

I'm not an expert. But I gathered that the relay takes a charge directly from the battery to the starter instead of routing it through the wiring harness. This ensures that the starter receives a full electrical signal rather than a weak one that might not fully engage the starter. In my...

    4Runner won't start when hot

I had the same problem for nearly 8 years. Replaced starters and batteries. Upgraded cables. Nothing worked. Several months ago I finally took it to a true Toyota expert in Austin (it took that long to find the shop). They installed a relay between the battery and the starter. It has...

    Finished my 86 finally

Great looking 4Runner. I like the child safety seat. It's one of my favorite "add-ons" for my 89.
