Thank you tkr128 and Cleric. I really thought something was wrong, especially after a 30 minute discussion with Toyota techs who insisted that the stereo should have a Mid EQ adjustment. Now I can focus on how to upgrade the head unit...which I was going to do regardless of the Mid EQ issue...
According to the manual there are two radio types...I and II, (the standard found in the SR5 and the JBL 6 disc changer). Both are supposed to have the ability to control the Mid EQ. 800-GO-TOYOTA confirmed there have been no equipment changes.

Have a two week old '04 SR5 with the standard stereo head unit. The manual indicates that one can adjust the settings for Bass, Mid, Treble, Fade and Balance. My stereo only toggles between Bass, Treble, Fade and Balance...there is no setting for Mid adjustment.
