What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

Take it up with your resident expert. "Running out of torque as you approach 5252 rpm." Incredible.

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

The calculation is elementary but that's not the point. engineeer attaches importance to the fact that at 5252 rpm the torque (lb x foot) is numerically equal to power (in horses). From that observation he concludes that exceeding 5252 rpm is bad for torque. In Europe they use other units for...

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

Again, 5252 rpm is the value you happen get when you use pounds x feet for torque units. It's when torque and power happen to be numerically equal. It's completely accidental and unimportant. In Europe it will be some other number. I can see you're frustrated, perhaps because you don't fully...

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

As I stated, If torque increases with rpm, i.e. both factors on the right hand side increase, then their product (HP) will also increase. Pay attention. In your graph, power, not torque, increases with RPM. If power increases with RPM torque does not necessarily do so. However, if torque...

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

Sorry, that's just plain silly. So above 5252 rpm the numerical value of power (expressed in some system of units) exceeds the numerical value of torque. How is that important? Speaking of understanding formulas, you wrote: Mathematical impossibility. If torque increases with rpm, i.e. both...

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

I appreciate you trying to help. I've read that article, which does little else but define torque & power. Hmm.... The link you provided goes at great lengths to establish that power = constant x torque x rpm ( where the numerical value of the constant depends on the system of units you use...

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

Sure, if you want to bother. Then, according to what people have said in this thread (at redline you're way past max. power), these shift points are not optimally programmed if you want to achieve the fastest acceleration possible. If I floor the gas the computer should take me to the gear &...

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

Your automatic vehicle goes to redline before upshifting? Unlikely.

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

So you're already at the redline and the next thing you do is downshift? That's a completely illogical thing to do. Did he admit doing that, downshifting after hitting the redline? In that case the repairs wouldnt be covered by warranty.

Your insurance company is going to love you for installing this contraption. Perfect excuse for not covering damage.

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

Rule of thumb is : descend in the same gear you'd use to go uphill.

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

That's actually a very good point.

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

This is actually a VERY different scenario: you will blow the engine if, by error, you shift into 2nd when you mean to shift into 4rd. The rev limiter can't save you there, because you're not using the gas pedal to redline it, you're actually mechanically forcing the enginer waay over the redline.

What happens, exactly, when you hit the redline?

My wife has one of these shiftable automatics. The fact is that is that it doesn't always obey you, the computer will always take over. You dont really have control over the RPMs.
