does putting an air intake make a difference performance wise?

everything was tigthen up. no loose wires. it didnt make any noise when it shut off. the only reason i was able to tell was because i lost power steering and all my lights came on as if i was about to start it. when i was turning it back on it sounded like it wasnt getting enough power to turn...

i was doing some off roading and i hit the gas and hit a couple bumps alittle rough,and my 4runner turned off. what might it be? it took a couple trys to start it back up.
