Realistically, at what odo reading should I go about swapping out my timing belt, and what could happen if it breaks while I'm driving?

I own a 2000 4Runner, and have recently gotten into offroading but my poor truck is sorely underequipt. It has stock everything. Last weekend was the last straw. I gashed the bottom and lost a tire. I need a lift (how much?), new wheels and tires, underarmor, and sliders. Where do I start...
