Update guys, the tapping wasn't valves afterall but a rod knocking! The lesson: whenever you gotta throttle her hard up steep inclines make sure the block has plenty of oil!! At least this gives my friend an excuse to rebuild the block now.
We got the truck running today, the battery swap blew the 80A alternator fuse and once we replaced it she cranked fine. The tapping was the vavles, it was from the miniscule amout of oil being pushed back from the steep climb. Hope this can help someone in the future if you run the truck offroad.
