Hi guys, friend of mine has a stock 94 T4R, I have a Honda ATV and we ride trails near my house. The truck is incredibly tough and rugged as hell as he's torn through mudholes, crossed rivers and climbed some really steep incline hills right behind my rancher.
Yesterday we crossed a local river with water about 2- 3 high a total of 3 times. Each time was no problem for his truck and we inspected under the hood after each pass, he had some water enter the engine bay but never touched the airbox that we could tell. So next he tackles about a 100 foothill at a 60 degree incline, near the top he is really struggling with the truck to get some grip on the dirt and gravel. So he's spinning pretty profusely but manages the climb. Near the top though we at the base of the hill can hear a loud metalic tapping or clicking sound that continues even as he is at a standstill. Then he shuts the truck off.
I climb the hill to tell him I heard the sound and he tries to restart the truck so we can recreate and check it out. The truck struggles to crank as if the battery is low and eventually does not crank. So we borrowed a friends battery also on the trail and the truck cranks fine, with the engine running we can tell the noise is coming from the engine block itself and almost sounds like valves tapping. after a few seconds though it cuts out and the engine idles as if normally operating.
so with the truck still running my friend swaps the good battery out and places his problematic battery in.With truck running during this period as soon as he touches one of the terminals we hear a huge pop like a relay or fuse blew and the truck dies suddenly. So we stick the good battery in and try to restart it. Nothing but a click sounded alot like a relay near the battery. So now his entire electrical system is not functioning even with a new battery and his engine does not turn over. The one relay we can confirm blown is the 80A to the Alternator. So the truck is stranded out on the trails while we try and diagnose this situation, can any 4runnner guys out there give us some advice to bring the electrical system back up and restart the truck?
