A lot of people have offered to buy it from me. I've driven it for 25 years, and it is a part of me now. I will probably drive it until the wheels fall off and then purchase new wheels!

396,000+ miles on my base model. I am going to be buried in it behind the wheel and wearing my Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses.

I have a 1997 base model manual 5 speed 4Runner, and I have always wondered if it would be feasible or even possible to swap my 2.7L 4cyl motor for a 6cyl. Anybody out there have any experience with this? Of course, next I would want to swap out my 2WD for 4WD. :cowboy:

It wasn't exactly today, but, repaired my automatic antenna on my 1997 base model. The weld that holds the bracket that holds the antenna motor to the body broke. The antenna shot out of its track and landed in a parking lot. I removed the fender and paid a guy to tack-weld the bracket back...

I think you are probably right about OEM vs auto store parts. I once had a horrible experience with a non-OEM clutch pressure plate. It "shuddered" when starting off in 1st gear. Took it back to the mechanic who installed another non-OEM part with the same result. Then I phoned in to a local...

I can't comment on your particular issues, but I think I can give you some good advice. I learned the hard way to purchase OEM parts for your transmission when it needs repairs.

I have a 1997 base model with a 2.7L engine. With the a/c off, my tach reads a steady 700. If I turn the a/c on, the tach goes up to 900, but after a few minutes, the engine runs rough and the rpms drop to about 700 - 500. Sounds like it is going to stall, but then it shoots up to 900 again...

Update: 8 days later and still no problem with the battery light. The alternator replacement must have fixed it.

I drove the 4runner 10 miles yesterday, and the battery light started blinking at mile 5. I replaced the alternator today with a rebuild; $179.99 at Auto Zone. I drove the 4runner 10.5 miles tonight, and the battery light stayed quiet. Maybe it is fixed. I will keep y'all posted. Update: 8...

My battery light on my 1997 4runner is flashing intermittently, but the alternator and battery both check out to be okay. I just had a mechanic do an analysis. He replaced the cable from the battery to the starter because the old one was frayed. I picked up the car, and it did not flash on...

The smoke was caused by the engine ground wire melting. Had to get a replacement from Toyota, but it was my own fault. I was getting a flashing batter charge light on my console. I checked the battery terminal connections and they looked suspicious. So I unhooked the terminals, dismantled...

I have a '97, and my seatbelt light just started doing the same thing.

One day I turned on my radio, and the motor raised the mast and it flew completely off of my 4runner. With the radio still on, I picked the mast up off the ground, stuffed the plastic/nylon track in the hole and then turned the radio off. The motor grabbed the antenna and retracted it back...

How about a fire extinguisher to augment any first aid kit?

Hooked up a new engine ground wire, connected my battery and almost caught my 4runner on fire. Hooked up positive, then negative, and then the negative post started melting and sparks flew! Whew!
