Update - many of you were interested in whether or not I bought the vehicle that was the subject of the first post. I would like to clarify, that I have not yet. At this point, quite a bit of time has elapsed, so if I do purchase something, it will not be what I was originally looking at.

Feeling pretty good about not buying the 4runner I was looking at. I will now buy a 2018, which will be much newer.

I made my mind up to buy this vehicle last week and now it has been sold. I will start the search over.

I would probably do an MDX and be done with it if you are only going on dirt roads. Rides a lot better and has more features.

In my area, most Toyotas were about 4-5k off MSRP around this time. I'm not sure if the 4Runner was included on that list. The main thing I've looked at is how a particular model is selling. With 4Runners it seems to be dependent on the area.

In case there was any question, I did not buy the 4runner. I am waiting until 2017 models come out.

I'd do 5k on the first change, but that's just something I've always done. I can really speak to the type of weather you have, but maybe some of the other guys will chime in. I know there's been a ton of discussion on the topic in the past.

I did not know Toyota had such a problem with rust, but based on your last comment, I performed a quick review. It appears the Tacoma and a couple other models have had some serious rust issues to the extent that there was a buyback. I guess I would be concerned myself.

Dear Whiplash Willy, If the rust bothers you that much, could you have a body shop look at it? Additionally, you could always wire brush it an hit it with paint.
