Valve Cover Gasket Fail every 10K miles???

I had a leaky valve cover gasket replaced at 70,000 miles at a Toyota dealer. It was not done well; the same dealer recognized this and re-did the repair at no charge a year or so later at 80,000 miles. Since that re-do, another 15 months has gone by, the odometer up another 11K to 91,000...

    Crappy winter gas

don't know whether it's the gasoline or the temperature drop over the past couple of weeks, but you're right, the MPG is down by one or two on my 'runner also just in the last couple weeks.

    3rd Gens Too Old Now?

Nice start to the thread, and great stories followed on. I'm with the folks who talked about the classic exterior design of the 3rd Gen. Somebody mentioned the indent lines over the wheel wells -- totally agree, it muscles out the truck just right. I tried a 4th Gen, but it felt more like a...

    MPG's way up

Interesting post. 18.5 consistently (a lot of city?) is amazing. I get 17 mpg city, 20.5 highway fairly consistently, but I have to take care to achieve that, watch RPMs and jackrabbit starts and that sorta thing. But my questions to you are:--- how often do you change the oil? is it...

15.6 mpg new to me 4runner

15-18 mpg city; 20-21 mpg on all-flat highway at 65 mph or under qualifies as normal for the 2001 4WD. Much newer SUVs really don't do so much better -- and it keeps me maintaining my 3rd gen. as long as I can.

Giving my 4runner to my wife

we have a 17th month old boy riding on the original stock shocks, only 86K miles on the T4R though. Tell you what, the baby doesn't notice a thing, likes the high up ride actually, always looking around and yelling out stuff. This work is all for the spouse. Which makes it doubly important, I...

    check engine light

Bug shield or NO Bug shield??

Bug shield, called a "Toyot" minus the A, came with my "every option on it" used 01. And it's great, very well worth it. Probably get 90 percent less bugs on the windshield with it. Even blasted a couple of errant birds overhead as well.

    Maintenance Suggestions???

At 170K, chances are it has had at most one timing belt change, if that. So if you want to keep the 2001 for some years, just go ahead and change it now. No worries later. Well, that's what I'd do. As a bonus, you'll get all new coolant. Totally agree with the changing the fluid in the...

    engine squeaking loudly

not a mechanic, but your question interested me enough to see the answers. And yeah, I would guess it's belts, too. They do dry out. Shipped a vehicle from Ethiopia to Mexico once, took almost 6 months, and it just shrieked. Turned out to be belts, and that was all. Glad those other two...

    Noob down in FL

Mechanical noob here, but 6-years with a 2001 T4R Limited. What do you want to do with the suspension? Mine seems ok at 88,000 miles, haven't done anything with it, not even shocks. What's up with yours?

    2002 4Runner - Typical Brake System sounds

I have a 2001 T4R Ltd, and I know the sound you're referring to. I guess it's normal. In six years with my vehicle I have I just ignored it, don't pump brakes or anything, and everything always works, is fine. It is weird, agreed, but no problem I'm aware of so far. It fires off more when...
