engine squeaking loudly

ive got a 2001, v6, 2wd, with @130,000 miles. the engine will most of the time squeak really loudly when i first start it up. it goes away after i get past 15mph, or i put it in neutral and rev the engine to about 3000rpm, I live in a very dry and dusty area(west texas) and park on the top of a parking garage. is the sound it makes just because of all the crap blown in the engine or are my belts or pulleys screwed up? also my catalytic converter has gone bad/not working properly could that be it as well?

99% sure its a loose belt...

id vote power steering belt when i put in new belts it wasn't tight enough and made a hell of a noise

not a mechanic, but your question interested me enough to see the answers. And yeah, I would guess it's belts, too. They do dry out. Shipped a vehicle from Ethiopia to Mexico once, took almost 6 months, and it just shrieked. Turned out to be belts, and that was all. Glad those other two folks spoke up right away.

+1 on belt. my squeeks like a mother and its dry and cracked. Replacing them this weekend anyway.

Are you sure there's not a cat caught in your fan? I'm just kidding it's probably one of the serpentine belts, but the cat thing really happened to my brother. :wow2: poor kitty.

I had this same problem in my 2000. Turns out my water pump was leaking onto the belts. I actually couldn't even see the drip but when I had the water pump replaced with my T-belt the noise went away. If you think about it the belts squeal if they are slipping, like due to my case a leaking water pump. Get in there and take a look.

Funny thing you mentioned that. My Uncles cousin came over one day because she heard a squeeling comming from the engine. We popped open the hood and a Rabbit came bolting out. Needless to say we both started laughing. :cowboy:
