It was the voltage regulator! It wasn't the bulb. So the alternator was thoroughly bad - the brushes were worn down, the voltage regulator and rectifier were both bad. How do I know? Brushes worn down - one brush didn't need to be pushed down for assembly. I replaced both. No battery light...

So the bulb being out could cause a proper charging system to not function?

Hah! Fair point. I guess I was just really hoping for a way to make my two two problems be linked and resolved together - this and the alternator not working. I usually pay attention to the dash lights when I start all my vehicles. It seemed mighty coincidental. Thanks!

Hi, I have attached a few photos to paint a better picture of the issue. The brakes have not been working too well, which led me to undertake this exercise. As far as I can tell the rubber seal (?) on the second/ rear piston has a tear, and that's the culprit. The 4R has close to 250 K miles...

1999, 239 K miles. I installed new pads on the rear drum pads recently, and the front ones were good too. No, I didn’t look inside the drums, but I will do that. The lines looked good inside the engine bay.

Thanks. The oil level was lower than usual when I changed it last month. I check levels regularly between oil changes. These sound like they are at top of the engine, so look at from under the hood?

Are there any other tests I can do? I was thinking of topping off and bleeding the brakes. I know a bad master cylinder can cause the problem intermittently. Just hate throwing parts at a problem without being sure.

Thanks, that was going to be my next step. I checked the dipsticks for power steering and transmission, both are fine. I guess it’s time to bring out the brake cleaner and wipe it all down.
