The instructions I have are for 1998-2001 4Runners. I don't know if they will work with your 04. Regarding button pushes... I think it was lock/unlock = one. Though since I did this a year ago, I cannot honestly remember.

According to the Owners Manual for my 2000 LTD 4WD, that place is for a Box of Reflective Triangles. Check out Pep Boys, The small rectangular box fits right in there and the straps hold it down. I use mine for First Aid, Flashlight, Folding Shovel and Bungies.
