20004WD & Remote Programing ?

Hi all,
I have been lurking here as I tried to decide on a 4WD purchase. You have helped me decide on a 4Runner and yesterday I drove home a 2000 Limited 4WD.

I have a couple of questions.
1. After reading Thai's excellent article on the 01-03 4WD system, I am curious about my own. I have purchased an owners manual (on the way), and the visor card only explains how to shift the transfer case, not why you want to be in which particular mode. Can someone please explain this system as it is very different than the 01 version?

2. The truck came with only one remote. I have purchased another on e-bay, and want to know if anyone can explain the procedure for re-programming the RSS-210 type?

Thanks in advance for any response!!

Skyrat,

Wow, you've been doing some research!

For 2000 4runner, you have basically a very similar system to the '01 and up models in terms of function:

1. 2wd mode

2. 4wd mode 4-HI with center diff UNlock
3. 4wd mode 4-HI with center diff LOCK

4. 4wd mode 4-LO with center diff UNlock
5. 4wd mode 4-LO with center diff LOCK

I believe that on 2000 models, all of this function is accomplish with the transfer case lever. I am not sure if you have the option of UNlocking the center diff in 4-LO (#4). So, please confirm it with the owner's manual.

For me, i use the 2wd mode (#1 above) for daily driving on dry land. Some people leave it in 4wd (#2) forever and just drive it that way. The only difference is that in 4wd mode, your fuel economy will slightly be lower. Also, acceleration may feel a bit slower (as power has to be transferred to front axle, instead of all going to the rear axle). Some owners claim that if you leave the 4runner in 4wd all the time, you won't need to rotate your tires. I don't know about this, but i tend to use 2wd most of the time and switch to 4wd when raining or off-roading.

You should use the 4wd mode (#2) for at least 10 miles EVERY month. No need to lock center diff. The reason for this is to keep the front differential well-lubricated.

When in 4wd, you are full-time...that is, power is always divided between the front and rear axles. It is NOT AWD, where power is mostly to the rear axle until slippage. Full-time 4wd systems are considered superior to AWD systems because it is PROactive, rather than REactive (lag time).

When you go off the road (camping, off-road, etc.), you should lock your center diff (#3). Remember, locking center diff should ONLY be done on a SLIPPERY SURFACE. If you lock the center diff on dry land, you will cause binding on the center differential (as you turn, the front and rear axles are spinning at different rate; locking the center diff does not allow for this difference...thus, you have binding). Locking the center diff provides a true 50/50 split of power all the time to the front and rear axles.

4-LO mode (#4 and #5) should be used in severe terrain, or hill climbs/decends, and rocks. 4-LO multiplies your engine torque by 2.57 times. Thus, you will have more power...in addition, your speed will be slower. This mode is good for going slowly over severe terrain. For climbing, this mode gives you more torque to work with. In addition, for going down a steep hill, 4-LO will cause engine braking, thus slowing you down on your descent. However, you may still need to use the brakes.

Whenever in 4-LO, you should lock the center diff anyway.

As for your second question, i have no idea. Sorry.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Thai for the great reply. You are right about #4 (as far as I can tell).
My Transfer Case Shifter says"

2H-4H
4H LOCKED
4L LOCKED

:o)

The remote programming worked great. I followed the istructions below to add the remote to the one I am already using. Mail me with any questions.

4Runner Remote Reprogramming
Start registration of recognition code. The vehicle should be in the following conditions:
1. The key is not inserted in the ignition key cylinder.
2. Drivers door is open (other doors are closed)
3. Drivers door is unlocked
Insert the key into the ignition key cylinder, then pull it out

Within 40 secs.
Press the manual door lock control switch 5 times to LOCK/UNLOCK at approx. 1 sec. intervals
1. Lock / unlock
2. Lock / unlock
3. Lock / unlock
4. Lock / unlock
5. Lock / unlock

Close the drivers door, then open it.
Again Press the manual door lock control switch 5 times to LOCK/UNLOCK at approx. 1 sec. intervals
1. Lock / unlock
2. Lock / unlock
3. Lock / unlock
4. Lock / unlock
5. Lock / unlock

Insert the key into the ignition key cylinder.
Turn the ignition switch from on to lock at approx. 1 sec. intervals
1 to 5 times to select the mode.

Add Mode ON - LOCK change occurs 1 times
Rewrite mode ON - LOCK change occurs 2 times
Confirmation mode ON - LOCK change occurs 3 times
Prohibition mode ON - LOCK change occurs 5 times

Pull out the key plate from the ignition key cylinder
When add mode or rewrite mode is selected.
Body ECU automatically performs the LOCK-UNLOCK operation once or twice at 1 sec. interval to inform the operator that either the add mode or rewrite mode has been selected
LOCK-UNLOCK occurs once indicates that add mode has been selected
LOCK-UNLOCK occurs twice indicates that rewrite mode has been selected

Press the lock and unlock switches on the transmitter switch simultaneously for less then 1.5 sec.
Again press either of switches on the transmitter switch for more than 1 sec.
Body ECU automatically performs LOCK-UNLOCK operation once or twice at a 1 sec interval to inform the operator that it has received the signal from the transmitter

LOCK-UNLOCK occurs once - registration of recognition code is completed
LOCK-UNLOCK occurs twice - registration of recognition code has not been completed.
Recognition code received first time and second time did not match.
If they are not performed, the mode returns to the normal mode, then start with start registration of recognition code.

Proceed to finish registration
If even one of the following conditions is satisfied, registration of recognition codes in completed.
-40 seconds elapses since the body ECU response
-the driver

Damn, Skyrat! Those are very detailed instructions...i nearly fell asleep halfway thru! :D

Thanks.

Was not successful.

When you say
Press the manual door lock control switch 5 times to LOCK/UNLOCK at approx. 1 sec. intervals
do you mean press the button twice (once to lock then once to unlock) or do you mean 5 total presses (1 lock; 2 unlock; 3 lock; etc.)?

Also (and don't flame me too badly) by manual door lock did you press the button or did you move the locking switch on the door?

I've got to get my other transmitter working before I installe my VIP 3200 Plus.

TIA

The instructions I have are for 1998-2001 4Runners. I don't know if they will work with your 04.

Regarding button pushes...
I think it was lock/unlock = one. Though since I did this a year ago, I cannot honestly remember.

DOOH!!

I just realized the year of your runner...I bet that is why I'm having problems.

Oh well, thanks anyway!
